GETTING STARTED & REQUIREMENTS

Q: What is the minimum age to start driving lessons in the UK?

A: You can start driving lessons at 16 if you receive disability mobility allowance, otherwise you must be 17 to drive on public roads. You can apply for your Provisional Licence at 15 years and 9 months.

Q: Do I need my Provisional Licence before booking a lesson?

A: Yes. Your instructor cannot let you drive on public roads without seeing your valid Provisional Driving Licence. You can apply online via the DVLA.

Q: Can I start lessons before passing my Theory Test?

A: Absolutely. Most learners start practical lessons while studying for their Theory Test. Learning both together often makes the highway code and signs easier to remember.

Q: What documents do I need to show my instructor?

A: Your photocard Provisional Licence. If you have an older paper licence, bring a valid passport as photo ID.

Q: Do you cover specific postcodes in London?

A: Yes, Excel Driving primarily serves East London including Barking, Dagenham, Ilford, Goodmayes, Hornchurch, and surrounding areas.

LESSONS & SCHEDULING

Q: How long is each driving lesson?

A: Most learners prefer 2-hour lessons because they allow time to practise rural, urban and dual carriageway driving in one session. 1-hour lessons are also available but less effective.

Q: How often should I take lessons?

A: We recommend at least 2 hours per week to build muscle memory and confidence. Gaps longer than a week often mean spending time re-learning previous skills.

Q: Do you offer evening or weekend lessons?

A: Yes. Many instructors offer slots from early morning until evening, including Saturdays. Weekend slots fill quickly – book in advance.

Q: Can I choose my instructor?

We will assign a DVSA-certified instructor based on your availability and location. If you would prefer a male or female instructor or manual or automatic car, just let us know.

Q: What if I need to cancel a lesson?

A: We require at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged at the full lesson rate.

PRICING & BLOCK BOOKINGS

Q: How much do driving lessons cost?

A: Prices vary by location and instructor, but typical rates in London are £35–£45 per hour. Block bookings reduce the hourly rate.

Q: What is the cheapest way to book lessons?

A: Block bookings of 10, 20 or 30 hours offer the biggest savings. For example, a 20-hour block can save you up to two free lessons compared to pay-as-you-go.

Q: Do block booking hours expire?

A: They are valid for 6 months from the first lesson. This encourages regular practice – the key to passing quickly.

Q: Can I get a refund on unused block hours?

A: Yes, but an admin fee may apply. If you pass your test early, we refund remaining hours at the pay-as-you-go rate, not the discounted block rate.

Q: Do you accept card payments or instalments?

A: We accept bank transfer for Block booking, and cash. Instalment plans can be arranged for large block bookings.

THEORY TEST HELP

Q: What should I study to pass my Theory Test?

· The Highway Code
· Know Your Traffic Signs
· Driving The Essential Skills
· A good mobile app: Driving Theory Test 4 in 1 Kit by Focus Multimedia

Q: Where is the nearest Theory Test centre?

A: For most East London learners, Ilford is the closest. Others include mile end, and Southwark.

Q: How many hazard perception clips are in the real test?

A: 14 clips. You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass. We can recommend practice apps with DVSA-licensed clips.

Q: Can you help me book my Theory Test?

A: We can guide you through the official DVSA website and give you tips to avoid fake booking sites that overcharge.

Q: Do I need to pass the Theory Test before I can start my driving lessons ?

A: No. In fact it is a good idea to learn the theory whilst you are learning the practical as it can bring the subject alive making it easier to understand and remember.

PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST

Q: Which test centres do you cover?

A: We primarily use Goodmayes, Barking and Hornchurch test centres. We know the local test routes and common exam fault areas.

Q: How many hours of lessons do I need before my test?

A: The DVSA average is 45 hours with an instructor plus 22 hours private practice. Many of our students pass closer to 30–40 hours with consistent weekly lessons.

Q: Can I use my instructor's car for the test?

A: Yes – as long as you have had recent lessons in it and its £150 for car hire including insurence. we will make sure its roadworthy, insured, and has dual controls. We will handle all the vehicle checks.

Q: What happens if I fail my test?

A: You can book a retake for 10 working days later. We will go through your fail sheet point-by-point and give you focused lessons to fix those faults.

Q: How will I know I am test-ready?

A: Your instructor will conduct a mock test under real exam conditions. When you consistently pass mocks with minor faults only, you are ready.

NERVES & CONFIDENCE

Q: I am really nervous about driving – can you help?

A: Yes. Our instructors are trained to work with anxious learners. We start in very quiet residential streets and never rush you. Many nervous beginners become confident drivers.

Q: What if I make a dangerous mistake during a lesson?

A: Your instructor has dual controls (brake, clutch). They will intervene instantly to keep you safe. No judgement – mistakes are how you learn..

Q: Can nervous beginners start lessons ?

A: Yes, we specialise in helping nervous and beginner learners build confidence safely and comfortably.

Q: Do you teach drivers with a previous ban or conviction?

A: Yes, on a case-by-case basis. You must have a valid Provisional Licence and be legally allowed to drive. We focus on rebuilding safe habits.

INTENSIVE COURSES

Q: Do you offer intensive "pass in a week" courses?

A: Yes – subject to instructor availability. We will assess your current level first. True beginners usually need 35–45 hours spread over 2–3 weeks, not 5 days.

Q: How do I book an intensive course?

A: Contact us or book online your first lesson. We will check your experience, then design a bespoke schedule with theory support if needed.

Q: Is an intensive course better than weekly lessons?

A: It depends on you. Intensive suits people with a tight deadline or high focus. Weekly lessons give time for muscle memory to settle. Many learners mix both.

AFTER YOU PASS

Q: Will I be added to your Recent Passes page?

A: Yes – with your permission. We love celebrating your success. Your first name only will appear alongside other students who passed recently.

Q: Do you offer Pass Plus or motorway lessons?

A: Yes. Pass Plus is a 6-hour course that can lower your insurance premiums. We also offer standalone motorway lessons for new drivers.

Q: Can I hire a car from you after I pass?

A: We do not hire cars, but we can recommend local rental companies that accept newly qualified drivers (some have lower age limits).

Q: What should I do if I lose my confidence after passing?

A: Book a refresher lesson with us. Many new drivers feel anxious driving alone at first – a 2-hour session can rebuild your confidence completely.

OTHER COMMON QUESTIONS

Q: Can a friend or relative teach me instead?

A: Legally yes, if they are over 21 and have held a full licence for at least 3 years. But DVSA research shows learners who take professional lessons have a much higher first-time pass rate and safer long-term driving habits.

Q: Do you teach automatic only?

A: We teach both manual and automatic. If you know you will only ever drive automatic, learning in an automatic car is faster – typically 10–15 fewer hours needed.

Q: Do you have a car with adaptations for disabled drivers?

A: Please call us to discuss your specific needs. We can refer you to specialist mobility driving schools if we cannot accommodate your adaptation.

Q: How do I complain if I am unhappy with my instructor?

A: Contact our office immediately. We will listen, mediate, and assign a different instructor if needed. Your safety and satisfaction are our priority..

Q: How do I book my first lesson?

A: Call, WhatsApp or use our online booking page for automatic.
